29. Coprophagia in the Samoyed - Gastro-colic reflex?

This male Samoyed eats his own stools for the past 2 weeks and sleep on his urine.
He was bought from a homebreeder. In the new home, no newspapers are provided. He pees on a puppy training pad. He poops 5x a day.

Coprophagia is a difficult problem to resolve.

Other than the usual recommendations, I think one way is to make use of the gastro-colic reflex --- a puppy poops within 10 minutes of eating. The procedure is as follows:

1. Make that the puppy is fed only two times a day (except for the mini-Malteses, chihuahua and the pomeranian). If he does not finish his food within 5 minutes, remove the food.

2. Do NOT distract the puppy during and after eating. Let him poop within 10 minutes of eating. Remove the food dish if he does not finish his food.

3. If he does not poop, do not let him out or play with him.

4. Once he poops, remove his poo and praise plus treat him. Give him his special chew toy and let him come out of the playpen or confined area.

This procedure requires an alert owner who gives a routine to the puppy for the first 2 weeks after purchase. Consistency and perseverance. Children and neighbours are distractions to the puppy. That is why many owners are unsuccessful in early toilet-training and coprophagia problems.
